End Hunger Network

End Hunger Network has worked for more than two decades to develop an innovative, multifaceted system that can solve the hunger problem. Each of our four programs take a different approach to preventing food waste and ensuring that Houston's hungry receive food.

The food donations we collect mean

children who can learn and play;
adults who can work their hardest to support their
families; and
elderly people who have the strength and energy to
remain healthy and vital.

Since 1986, End Hunger Network has maintained red barrels for food donations in grocery stores throughout the Houston area. Today, there are barrels in over 250 stores throughout our community.

Each barrel has a sign indicating to which area hunger-relief agency it is assigned. On a regular basis, that agency collects the food from the barrel to distribute to the neighborhood's hungry.

Donating to the Red Barrel program is easy:

Virtual Red Barrel
Locate a store with a red barrel.
Purchase nonperishable groceries to donate.
Drop your grocery donation into the red barrel by the
store's exit.

You can even purchase a prepackaged “Help End Hunger” bag filled with nutritious, high-quality foods specifically selected to best meet the needs of Houston's hunger-relief agencies.

Or click on the virtual red barrel to donate on-line. Every $1 donated equals $20 of food for Houston's hungry.

End Hunger Network's Food Rescue program connects perishable foods that would
otherwise go to waste with the thousands of hungry Houstonians who need them most.

Food Rescue trucks rescue viable, perishable food that would soon be thrown away by food-industry businesses and deliver it to hunger-relief agencies throughout the greater Houston area.

Each day, Food Rescue collects and delivers the most difficult foods for hunger-relief agencies to find: produce, meat, and dairy.

Food Rescue makes it possible for hunger-relief agencies to provide Houston's hungry with wholesome, nourishing meals.

Meal Prep

End Hunger Network captures fresh meat, vegetables and other healthy products and prepares balanced meals for distribution throughout the local hunger-relief system. The Meal Prep program produced more than 1 million frozen and fresh meals in 2007, which were distributed by more than 400 hunger-relief agencies to diverse clients throughout southeast Texas, and, in 2008, it will provide food-service job training to disadvantaged adults. Our volunteers and staff prepare and freeze about 5,000 meals each day that are distributed by emergency food providers in the greater Houston area.
