Program Overview
The Keegan Kitchen is a 3,700 square foot facility at the Mary Barden Keegan Center located on the North Freeway just north of downtown Houston. With help from volunteers, prisoners from the Texas Department of Corrections and Food Bank staff, hot and frozen meals are prepared for programs like Meals on Wheels, US Vets and Kids Cafe. The production of all meals is overseen by Chef Jose Montoya. Chef has years of experience bringing skill and love to the food he prepares.

Meals on Wheels

  • Meals on Wheels is a federally-funded program run by the United States Administration on Aging
  • Hot meals are provided through Meals on Wheels to citizens with limited access to outside human contact, including programs like Senior Friends
  • Frozen meals are provided through Meals on Wheels to seniors not qualifying for hot meals through Northwest Assistance Ministries and Interfaith Ministries distribution programs 
  • Almost 27,000 meals were prepared in June 2010
  • Chef Jose Montoya oversees production of all frozen and hot meals for this program

 

US Vets 

  • Hot meals are supplied 365 days per year for homeless vets in a residential facility
  • More than 90 vets receive meals through this program
  • Chef Jose Montoya oversees production of all meals

 

Kids Cafe

  • Meals are prepared for school aged children and served at after-school and summer programs
  • 21,429 meals were prepared and distributed in June 2010
  • 27 sites across the Food Bank region served meals to children over the summer
  • Chef Jose Montoya oversees production of all frozen and hot meals for this program

 

 

Getting involved
The Kitchen needs volunteers; contact Volunteer Services. Volunteers can plate, pack and prepare orders. People ages 14 and up are welcomed on Fridays and Saturdays, and ages 19 and up are welcomed on weekdays. We can also accommodate individuals with disabilities.

Volunteer hours
Monday – Saturday
Two shifts, 20 people max
8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
